phpBB stands for PHP Bulletin Board and is widely available under the GNU General Public License. James Atkinson had started it as a simple UBB-like forum on June 17th, 2000. phpBB 1.0.0 got launched on December 9th, 2000. The final release of the phpBB 1.4.4 got launched on November 6th, 2001. PhpBB2 happened to be the precursor of today's time's phpBB3.
